I NEED YOUR
HELP
It is astonishing how writers agonize over titles. The
only people who obsess about them more are publishers.
City of Dreams was originally called Legacy. Boring. I
don’t now remember exactly how we came up with City
of Dreams, but once we did everyone agreed it
was perfect. Shadowbrook was approved from
the first. Then came the third book in the
series. It started out as Kingdom Come and
I liked that. So did my editor. Not,
however, S & S’s marketing department. Call
it City of Something they said. It’s
a sequel, after all. So, City of
Glory.
What in the name of all that’s holy do we
do for an encore?
The working title is City of Promise. I
truly hate it. We’re in such a son-of-Sam
mode, and that’s so much not what my work is
about.
Okay, if you’ve read the matrix and the excerpt,
you know as much about the book as my publisher does. What
do you think it should be called?
What would make you see it in a book store, and
especially if you’d read my other books, but
even if you had not, want to pick it up and read
it? What can we do that makes it obvious it’s
a series, but doesn’t sound as if we’ve
run out of ideas?
All suggestions
will be gratefully received. As in, I kiss your
feet because I’m going crazy. And
thinking hard about a suitable prize for the winner.
